The Lake District
Mountains and lakes are my favourite landscape subjects. Generally the best light for landscapes can be found at the beginning or end of the day when the sun is low or even just below the horizon. Being fortunate to live a reasonable driving distance from the northern end of the Lake District I can take a trip over there without too much pre-planning. One of my projects for this spring is to try and find viewpoints that work best at the end of the day. I generally prefer the evenings as it is easier to find a position suitable for the conditions on the day and be in place to capture the changing light as the sun goes down. However you can never be certain how the light will go and sometimes you can trek up a hill in optimistic mood only to find the light turns flat and uninteresting. On the other hand the most spectacular light can sometimes emerge at the end of an unpromising day. When that happens it makes the long trek back down the hill in darkness totally worthwhile.
Even if you do not do serious photography I recommend you take some time to really look at the light in the early morning or evening and see the way the colours of the sky affect the landscape. If you haven't really looked you may be surprised at the subtle colour changes that occur round about you.
